Seal The Loop

Over 1400 seals, including the endangered Australian sea lion, are killed annually across Australia through fishing line entanglement. Since 2013 Dolphin Marine Conservation Park has been proud to partner in the seal the loop program with the establishment of seal the loop nsw

Seal The Loop was initially founded by Zoos Victoria in 2010 to raise awareness of the issue of fishing line entanglement in Port Phillip Bay and address this issue through community education and the installation of specialised bins in key fishing locations. As the program grew, Seal the Loop bins spread across all the coastal council areas of Victoria.

Fishing line entanglement has always been a very important issue for Dolphin Marine Conservation Park as we are often called to rescue situations where sea birds, marine turtles or even dolphins and seals are entangled in discarded fishing line. A noteworthy example is the mother of our dolphin family, Calamity, who was rescued twice due to fishing line entanglement and who was not able to be released from the second rescue due to over 15m of fishing line which had wrapped around her tail.

Seeing the potential to save marine life, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park and Coffs Harbour City Council partnered with Zoos Victoria in 2013 to conduct a 'pilot' Seal The Loop program, installing 5 unique 'NSW Blue' Seal The Loop bins around the Coffs Harbour Jetty area.

Due to the success of the NSW program and with the support from three Councils; Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca Shire the program has expanded to over 27 Bins located between Nambucca Heads to Red Rock and with the help of our Volunteer Community Bin Collectors we have collected over 14 km of fishing line; over 2.5kg!  This Program is continuing its ongoing goal to raise public awareness of the effects of fishing waste on the marine environment; encouraging to keep our coastline clean.

THE FUTURE

  • Welcoming new Schools & Businesses who choose to join us by volunteering in our campaign to reduce fishing waste and save marine life.
  • Focus on further Community, Council & School involvement through Seal the Loop Appreciation Day
  • Install additional bins along the NSW Coastline
  • Conduct ongoing Data Surveys & collect important data

Nationally there are close to 200 Seal The Loop bins installed across Australia in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. All the Seal The Loop bins have been constructed from recycled plastic collected at Melbourne Zoo and since it's inception Seal The Loop has collected kilometers of fishing line, preventing the deaths of countless marine creatures.

Staff were very lovely and caring and they seemed to have real love and passion towards what they do which was great to see. We hope to retu..

My son and I came to visit the park in January, it was my sons second visit to the park we came in 2012 when he was 1, the smile on my son’s face during the show and seeing all the animals was well worth the 5 hour drive to get there, while sitting in the grandstand watching the show I heard about the in the water hugs with the seal so I thought to myself why not and I paid for my 8 years old ..

My wife and I are on a two week working holiday in Coffs Harbour and we are trying to see some of Coffs while we are here. Yesterday we walked from our accommodation to the Jetty Markets and were a little disappointed. Walking back to our resort, we passed the dolphins conservation park. My wife said "Would you like to go and have a look?" I didn't immediately know what the facility was. I was..

Pet porpoise pool holds a special memory for our family. Our 6 year old daughter was thrilled as she had the experience of brushing the dolphin's teeth. And our four month old couldn't have dreamt in his wildest dreams that he was being kissed by a seal! we don't need the pics to remind us of those memories ... they are etched in our minds. It was a brilliant holiday we had at Coffs Harbour , ..
